The Value of REALTOR® Day on Beacon Hill

Perhaps you’ve heard your fellow colleagues and REALTORS® talk about the value they get from REALTOR® Day on Beacon Hill: the networking, the grassroots efforts, the sense of community. Maybe you’ve experienced it yourself.

However, as a first-timer, the thought of speaking with your state legislators in-person might be a little intimidating. To help you make the most of your experience, we spoke to Day on the Hill novices and experts alike about their first time and the power of coming together to represent homeowners, your profession, and the real estate industry.

“I have learned who my legislators are in my district and I know that they want to hear from me,” says Rita Coffey, general manager at Century 21 Tullish & Clancy in Weymouth. “They know I am a constituent and I now know that it matters.”

Additionally, legislators want to hear where you stand as a REALTOR®, on some of the most important issues pressing the Commonwealth today—from housing to taxes and crime.

“To me the great value is realizing that you do have a voice and it matters,” says Coffey. “Many of the legislators tell us that our voice gets heard loud and clear. Advocacy is one of my favorite things to do, and I am able to voice my concerns…to the issues that affect our homeowners, clients and our families on housing issues.”

As you prepare for Day on the Hill, be aware that there are resources for you at the MAR website, as well as on our YouTube channel (Check out the video: How to Prepare for the Annual Realtor® Day on Beacon Hill). Also prepare to be inspired. Kimberly Allard, broker-owner of Century 21 Professionals in Braintree, and 2013 MAR President, remembers the pride she felt during her first experience at Day on the Hill.

“I had no idea what to expect, I was so afraid that someone would call on me to speak,” says Allard.“I was amazed at the level of knowledge of my fellow REALTORS® and was relieved to see that there were many others that spoke and I didn’t have to. I remember feeling so very proud to belong to the REALTOR® Association.”
